Let us Pledge to make India “SuRakshit” on Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is an Indian festival of great significance. On this day brothers promise their sisters that they will always protect them.  But with the lawlessness and widespread crime today can any brother really provide that promise to his sister? We all know that the existing system has failed to provide security to women, and criminals have no fear of the law. Why should they, when our parliament itself has become the refuge of criminals.  There are over 160 members of parliament with serious charges of murder, extortion and rape. BJP and Congress each have over forty such MPs. They provide an umbrella of protection to the criminals on the street.  Recently the Supreme Court brought a ruling to bar people with criminal charges from parliament.  What did our existing political parties do? Hail this judgment? Accept it with open arms? As expected, they banded together to quickly oppose, challenge and try to scuttle this judgment.  We also know that we cannot expect anything f

Outbox, The Startup That Digitizes Your Postal Mail, Raises $5 Million Series A

Outbox, the startup that digitizes your postal mail then puts it online for access via web, iPhone, Android or iPad, has raised $5 million in Series A funding. The round was led by previous investor Floodgate and included investment from Founders Fund, Correlation Ventures, TDF Ventures, WTI, Expansion VC, and Peterson Ventures, as well as other angel investors. In total, Outbox raised from over 80 people using AngelList. This makes it the largest round ever raised on AngelList Invest, we’ve confirmed with AngelList founder Naval Ravikant, though not the largest total raise on AngelList. With Invest, accredited investors put in small amounts online, and AngelList creates an LLC on-the-fly that invests in the startup directly. This is not the first funding round for Outbox — it raised $2.2 million back in 2011, also led by Floodgate. Earlier this year, when the company launched in beta in San Francisco, there were also hints that it would take on add

Skype for Android makeover brings new UI and video messaging

Microsoft has updated the Skype app for Android (version 4.0) revamping its user interface inline with the company’s modern design philosophy seen in the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 versions of the app. The update is only available for Android phones at the time of writing of this post but Microsoft says that it intends to bring an updated app for tablets very shortly. The redesigned user interface gets rid of clutter and offers Recent, Favourite and People tabs listing the user’s recent chats, list of Favourite people and all Contacts, respectively. One can just tap on a name or a chat thread to start chatting, sending files or video messages or initiating a video or voice call. Adding people is also easy through the add icon located at the bottom within the chat thread. The two shortcuts for the Skype dialler and for initiating a new conversation are omnipresent across the three tabs, putting communication in focus. However, the Settings and options to c

AAP candidate from Delhi critical after car accident

The last few days have brought two cases of grievous assault on AAP supporters. It started with the killing of an AAP volunteer, Brajlal Rajput in Uttar Pradesh, he was crushed under a car repeatedly untill he died. Today, the AAP candidate from Seemapuri, Santosh Koli, became a victim of a car accident in Ghaziabad, UP.    Santosh and another AAP supporter, Kuldeep were on a  motorbike, travelling at a speed of 40 Kmph on a nearly empty road, about 200m into UP, in the Ghazaibad area. A car came up from behind and inspite of Kuldeep making way for it, the car hit the bike and bolted away. It left behind a critically injured Santosh.    Yes, this is the same Santosh that has been living under constant threat to her life because of her fearless crusade on RTI. She has already had two attempts made on her life and today seems like the third.    As we write this, blood is accumulating in her brain, she has had one surgery already and remains critical and under observation at

Arvind's letter to Sheila Dixit

Smt. Sheila Dikshit ji, I have received a letter written by your political secretary, Mr. Pawan Khera in which you have raised certain issues.  This letter answers those questions.  However, I am perplexed why you did not write to me directly  instead of using your staff member’s name.  A few months back you did the same thing.  I had stated in a public meeting that you are a broker of electricity companies. You probably took offense to it.  Even at that time, instead of filing a defamatory case against me in your name, you did it using Mr Khera’s name.  There is a saying in English- “A leader should lead from the front”.  Hiding behind someone, or firing from someone else's shoulder, demonstrates the weakness of a leader. You have stated in your  letter that Delhi politics was very clean upto now, and I have muddied it. You are feeling this way because till now, there was no one to oppose you in Delhi. There was also no opposition party in Delhi.  There was match fixing betwe

Brutal attack on AAP volunteers by Delhi police

Delhi police brutality! Yesterday many of our volunteers were brutally beaten up by the Delhi police for protesting outside the police station asking for the police to register an FIR in the case of a  young woman who was confined and raped for 2 days in Gokulpuri.  The picture (see below) and videos of the incident shows the viciousness of the attack on peacefully protesting young men and women.  Several of them were admitted to the hospital with broken bones and bleeding wounds.  When one of our volunteers asked for water, he was offered urine.  (Read the  news report  in 'The Hindu') Volunteers are our strength and when the police beats up any one of us, each lathi, each blow is a pain inflicted on all of us. Gandhiji’s freedom fighters had to endure the same brutality at the hands of the British rulers. Little did we know that this unjust treatment would continue even after we got independence and this time at the hands of our own elected government.  Thi
